mary-komINDIA stands at eighth position in 17th Asian Games 2014 at Incheon with a total of 57 medals which include 11 gold, 9 silver and 37 bronze.

It is not as good as in the 16th Asian Games held in 2010 at Guangzhou when Indians grabbed a total of 65 medals including 14 gold, 17 silver and 34 bronze.

Superwoman MC Mary Kom became the first Indian Woman boxer to win gold medal in the Asiad Games.

The five time world champion MC Mary Kom defeated Kazakhstan’s Zhaina Shekerbekove in the 48-51 kg category. The 31 year old who punched her way to gold is a mother of three. ‘Magnificent Mary’ as the world knows her is a police officer by occupation and martial arts is her hobby.

Priyanka Chopra who acted in the film on Mary Kom tweeted,

“Irrespective of the outcome of her final bout at the Asian Games 2014… India is proud of your achievement Mangtec Mary Kom. True Champion.”

Indian boxer Sarita Devi lost her semi-final bout in controversial circumstances. She became furious after losing the light weight semi-final against South Korea’s Park Ji-na. She refused to wear the bronze medal and took it in her hand. Later, she left the medal behind and was told by the authorities to take it with her. She had to apologise later.

The OCA president Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahad al-Sabah said,
“As an athlete, she had to respect the referee’s decision. She feels sadness because she felt she deserved better, but she also killed the moment for the other athletes. I am happy she apologised and this will not happen again.”
