Sania Mirza won her third Grand Slam Mixed doubles title with Brazilian Partner Bruno Soares and won the US Open Crown. Their first time partnership clicked brilliantly by securing a close win in the finals mixed doubles trophy. Sania said she was glad to stick to Bruno in a pressure situation. “Any Grand Slam final comes down to a lot of nerves. It is not so much about tennis. I’m glad we stuck together. We tried to stay positive. We held our nerves and emerged victorious,” she said.
Mirza dedicated the victory to India and the state of Telengana. She says, “I am really happy after I became the ambassador of Telengana, I won the first tournament I played.” Mirza also iterated that she had to reset her goals after suffering a spate of injuries. “I have spent seven of the last eight years being in the top 100. I used to play seven to eight matches a week but my body could not take it after three surgeries.”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that it was a matter of pride and he gave his warm wishes to her on winning the US Open Mixed doubles, “Congratulations to Sania Mirza for the victory in the US Open Mixed Double finals. We are very proud of the achievement.”
He further added, “Good news from US Open continued with Kei Nishikori’s exemplary win! My best wishes to this young sportsman for the final.”
